I’ve always approached problems analytically. I tend to believe there is usually a correct way to do something, or at least a small set of approaches that genuinely work. That doesn’t mean established methods are wrong, but I’ve always been taught to ask questions. Asking why often reveals alternatives that are simpler, faster, or more durable than the way things have always been done.
One trait that has followed me throughout my career is an ability to quickly identify weaknesses in an idea. Often the idea itself is sound, but hidden constraints make it difficult to execute. Once I see those constraints, they tend to stay with me until I either find a way around them or conclude that they cannot be avoided at all. This has occasionally made me unpopular, but it has also saved time, effort, and rework more than once.
When I’m brought into a complex or disorganized situation, my first instinct is to slow down. Before fixing anything, I need to understand what exists, how it evolved, and what people are actually trying to achieve. From there, the work becomes a matter of mapping a realistic path forward. Inconsistent systems and data are especially challenging, but they are also where careful analysis and structure can make the biggest difference.
My background in biology reinforced this way of thinking. Scientific work rewards curiosity, iteration, and respect for constraints. You learn by observing, refining questions, and adjusting your approach as new information becomes available. Over time, I’ve found that designing systems, applications, and data flows follows a similar pattern. Break the problem down, work through each piece deliberately, and let the solution emerge.
Some days are mentally exhausting. Others feel effortless, when progress comes quickly and solutions fall into place. From the outside, that can look like intuition or luck. In reality, it’s the result of experience, pattern recognition, and a willingness to stay with difficult problems longer than most people care to.
Outside of work, I reset through activities that demand focus and precision. Archery, in particular, provides a grounding counterbalance to analytical work. It clears my head and helps me return to problems with a calmer, more deliberate mindset.
At my best, I help people move past roadblocks. That is the work I enjoy most, and the role I continue to seek out.
